Love: Interview with Ruby Coast!

We met up with Mark Robert Whiting the bass player from Ruby Coast to discuss their new album, tour schedules, and what's in store for the future.

LH: How would you describe the new stuff? How would you compare it to your older stuff?

RC: The new stuff is a lot more mature. With our EP we were trying to go for short, upbeat pop songs. With this record, we took more time writing, and we tried to focus on having more variety and make it a full length album that you don't get bored of or have to skip any songs. We also spent a lot more time in the studio. With our EP, we spent 5 days in the studio. With this record, we were there for a month.

LH: When are you guys expecting to release the album? Where will fans be able to get it?

RC: We hope to release the album sometime in 2011. We are still shopping for labels, so we really cant say exactly. But the record is finished and we think it sounds great. When it is released, it will be available in all major record stores in North America, iTunes, etc.

LH: According to your facebook there's an RAC remix of one of your songs in the works? When can we be expecting that?

RC: This is true! I've only heard the first draft thats about half done. It already sounds amazing! I cant say when its going to be coming out, but RAC is in the midst of making their vol. 2 and it may or may not be on there. We've also been in contact with a few other bands about doing remixes, and are playing with the idea of releasing a few of those later on down the road. Who doesn't like a good remix right?

LH: What happened to the US tour?

RC: We were really pumped and ready to go. We thought that our working Visa's would be done in time cause there was a press release sent out saying it would only take 14 days. But immigrations still hasn't processed them yet (been almost 30 days). Damn, I would've been hanging in NYC right now.

LH: What's the your record label situation?

RC: Like I said earlier, the hunt for a label is still on. We've had some bites, and are pursuing some options. Having to cancel these US dates really screwed us, cause we had some labels that were going to come check us out. But, we are in the works of booking some showcases down South late November early December.

LH: Who are you guys listening to lately?

RC: Thats hard to answer. We're all into different stuff right now. I've been listening to the new Delta Spirit and Born Ruffians albums lately. One thing we can all agree on right now is "Beat dat beat" by DJ Pauly D. It gets us pretty psyched before a show hahaha.

LH: What's coming up in the future?

RC: We're heading out east with The Meligrove Band next week in support of their new album "Shimmering Lights". Thats going to be a blast! And we're in the midst of booking a cross Canada tour with one of our favorite bands for early next year. In the meantime, we'll be working hard, writing new songs, and hopefully recording some stripped down acoustic versions of some songs that are on the new record.

LH: Finally, one love, one hate

RC:
I HATE Jimmy Fallon. I never thought he was good on SNL, and I don't know how he got his own show or in movies. He seems like a good guy, but he's not that funny or good at acting.

I LOVE wine gums. They're my favorite candy. That, or sour ju jubes.

Thanks again to Ruby Coast!

Here is a taste of the amazing album, the title track "Whatever This Is"

LOVE - Them:Youth

Hailing from West London, the guys in Them:Youth seem to have a lot going for them early in the game. With only two singles out, it would be pretty easy to miss them in the mass of music out there, but these guys must have a pretty savvy marketing presence behind them. A quick look at their soundcloud page reveals more remixes than originals, which I interpret as people wanting more of their sound, even if they have to make it themselves. Their newest single "Toothache" comes packaged with a slick new video and a collaboration with Amsterdam label Outlaw Freelancers. Heres the video and some selections from their soundcloud, definitely a sound to keep an ear out for in the future.

HATE - Endnotes versus Footnotes

Why would I ever want to skip all the way to the end of a chapter to see what something means. The two halves of the Austro-Hungarian government were parsimonious in regards to military spending eh? I'm not skipping to the back to look that up. On another note, I despise the use of "vs." in text. I always write versus. It's a proper word, give it some love.

Love - White Russia

I received an email from this band about two weeks ago ad was immediately interested just base on the name. Hailing from South London and not Russia, the male/female duo have already met success across the pond and I expect just the same once people are exposed to them here. This is a band I'm really interested in following so expect more coverage in the future.
Be sure to check out their myspace and the rest of their songs on soundcloud

HATE - How Tempting Fire Alarms Are

There are endless fire alarms in the hallways at work. Every time I pass one I think about just yanking it and bailing. It's just the idea that I could create the biggest shit-storm ever in literally one second. So tempting gah.

Love - The Suburbs > Funeral > Neon Bible

The new Arcade Fire album The Suburbs has leaked. It was pretty much inevitable with so many people wanting to hear it and constantly being tempted with singles being released and snippets of songs revealed. I actually made a point of not downloading the singles that were released, not wanting to ruin the whole package. I've listened to it once through, repeated a couple songs here and there, and I can easily say its my favourite Arcade Fire album so far. Where Funeral was the buzz-worthy debut of a different sound, I never really got into Neon Bible. For me it was a capable sophomore follow-up, but it was just too slow and gloomy for me to listen to regularly (with the exception of the Go-Team sounding No Cars Go). The Suburbs is a perfect balance, a heartfelt mysterious sound, but with a steady beat keeping things moving start to finish. Definitely raises the chances of me going to see them later in the summer.

Heres two of my favourites so far

and more good stuff

Hate - People That Bike In High Gears Unnecessarily
lol @ basket

Those people that bike around with their legs just wildly pumping at the pedals and barely traveling anywhere. Use the proper gears, that's what they're for, you look like a fool.

HATE - Unnecessary Tip Options
(/groan)

I decided to go to Babaz for some lunch today. I decided to pay with debit, as always, and after I accept the cost, the machine asks me how much of a tip I would like to add. How about, zero. This is like having a tip option at McDonalds, or any other fast food restaurant, absolutely ridiculous. It's definitely not the first time I've noticed this, and I'll admit, if I were operating a restaurant I'd want to try and maximize any chances to make money, but I am a huge stickler for speed when using anything other than cash to pay, just leave a tip jar instead. Related to payment speed, the addition of all these chip cards is driving me nuts. I understand that it adds security, but nothing beats just swiping the Visa, scribbling a signature and bailing. Now I'm stuck in chip card limbo, the cashier thinking its a debit card, then having to redo it, then not leaving the card in long enough, etc. etc. In and out, like a ninja, that's all I ask for.

HATE - Wendys Combos

Sometime not long ago, Wendy's decided to implement some sort of combo service. Before, I believe it just used to be "do you want to biggie size that?". Now,  it is "do you want a small, medium, or large?". At first I figured I'd be safe, stick with a medium size, and it turns out to be biggie sized and cost like  5 bucks more. I've been tricked more times than I would like to admit. It seems like "small" just wouldnt cut it, but small is the actual medium. So what happens when someone can't eat an entire medium? There is no true small option. Also, I delved into the value meal options at one point, and wow, thats a super trick. You think, hey, this really is a value, good price, but then you're given a dixie cup to drink. Now, if you assume this is the "small" option, as I did, and the next time order a medium combo chicken wrap, you will receive THE BIGGIE SIZED EVERYTHING. Go back to the good old days Wendys. And bring back the wild mountain chicken sandwich. you bastards.
